Man on Football Manager — Faceless YouTube Channel Case Study
A self-initiated creator project exploring how an illustrated avatar, character animation, and consistent channel branding can create a distinctive YouTube presence without relying on on-camera appearances.
Overview
A faceless creator identity built around an animated avatar and experimental Football Manager content
Overview
Man on Football Manager is a YouTube channel dedicated to exploring the popular video game Football Manager. This project covered the creative process behind building the channel, from designing a unique illustrated avatar to producing engaging, experimental video content.
Objective
The goal was to create a distinctive YouTube channel for Football Manager enthusiasts while maintaining personal privacy by avoiding on-camera appearances. The content focused on creative experiments, such as altering player data and simulating long-term scenarios, giving viewers fresh and entertaining perspectives on the game.
This project now sits closely alongside my character-led branding service, showing how an illustrated persona can help creators build a recognisable identity without becoming the face of the channel.
Process
Building a creator persona that could carry the channel without needing a camera-facing host
Conceptualisation
The first step was to define the identity and purpose of the channel.
- Theme: The channel centres on Football Manager, blending gameplay insights with creative experiments.
- Tone: Friendly, informative, and slightly humorous, designed to appeal to football and gaming enthusiasts.
- Unique selling point: Simulations and “what-if” scenarios that spark curiosity and discussion within the community.
Character creation
Instead of appearing on camera, an illustrated avatar was designed to represent the channel’s persona.
- Design tool: Affinity Designer was used to create the character design.
- Character style: The avatar resembles a stylised, cartoon version of the creator, with expressive facial features and a casual, relatable appearance.
- Iteration: Several drafts were created to refine the look and make sure it matched the channel’s tone and branding.
Character animation
The avatar was brought to life using Adobe Character Animator.
- Rigging: The character was rigged to follow the creator’s movements in real time, allowing for natural gestures and expressions.
- Lip syncing: The software’s lip-syncing feature was used to match the character’s mouth movements to the creator’s speech.
- Testing: Multiple test recordings were made to fine-tune the character’s responsiveness and ensure smoother animation.
Content production
With the avatar ready, attention turned to creating engaging video content.
- Video concepts: Early ideas included altering player data, such as boosting stats or changing ages, and simulating 10-year future scenarios to explore the game’s mechanics.
- Recording gameplay: Screen recording software captured gameplay footage, while commentary was recorded alongside the animated avatar.
- Editing: Adobe Premiere Pro was used to combine gameplay footage, avatar animation, and on-screen graphics.
- Experimentation: Early videos helped test viewer interest and refine the production workflow.
Channel branding
A cohesive visual identity was created to make the channel more recognisable.
- Logo and banner: Designed in Affinity Designer, featuring the animated avatar and a football-themed background.
- Thumbnails: Bold, colourful thumbnails with clear text were created to attract clicks and improve visibility.
- Intro and outro: Short animated sequences were added to give the channel a more professional feel and reinforce the branding.
Challenges and solutions
- Technical setup: Learning Adobe Character Animator and troubleshooting rigging issues took time and persistence. Online tutorials and forums helped solve the main problems.
- Content strategy: Finding the right balance between creative experiments and audience appeal was challenging. Feedback from early viewers helped refine the video concepts.
- Time management: Balancing gameplay recording, editing, and animation was time-intensive. A more structured workflow helped streamline production.
Outcome
A distinctive faceless creator identity with an animated persona at the centre
Outcome
The Man on Football Manager channel became a working proof of concept for a faceless creator identity, using an illustrated avatar, animated presentation, and consistent YouTube visuals to give the channel a recognisable presence without relying on camera-facing content.
The project demonstrated how character-led branding can make niche creator content feel more distinctive, repeatable, and memorable across videos, thumbnails, channel artwork, and social content.
Key takeaways
- Innovative representation: Using an animated avatar allows for personal privacy while still creating a strong on-screen presence.
- Experimentation drives engagement: Creative, experimental content can resonate well with niche audiences.
- Consistency matters: Cohesive branding helps establish a clearer and more recognisable channel identity.
Man on Football Manager demonstrates how creativity, technology, and a clear creator persona can combine to produce an engaging and distinctive YouTube channel identity.
